Rules

The Tournament will consist of 3 rounds of group play, with 3 games each, and a 2-leg final.
Game score equals MFLS points for the week.
Round 1:
8 groups of 4 teams, 3 matches, weeks 17,19-20, top 2 teams advance
NOTE: Due to the limited number of MLS games (2) during AllStar week, week 18 will not be used for Tournament matches.

Round 3:
2 groups of 4 teams, 3 matches, weeks 24-26, group winners meet in the finals

Finals:
2-leg head-to-head, weeks 27-28.
The final week of MLS (week 29) will not be used.

Initial Groupings

Each group will be determined by random draw, to be held on Monday, July 11th, 2005.  Groups will be labeled A through H. To make the groupings fair, the teams will be ranked from 1-32 based on week 15 standings, then divided into 4 blocks of eight: 1-8, 9-16, 17-24, 25-32. One team from each block of 8 will be randomly drawn into each group A-H.

Tie-breakers for initial ranking will be:
  1. MFLS points through week 15
  2. Goals scored
  3. Assists scored
  4. Fewest NAP (hey, they have to be used for something now!)
  5. MFLS points, week 14 (or latest week not tied)
  6. Random selection

Group Play

Seedings in round one will be determined by initial ranking (above).

Group play will be decided on points, 3 for a win, 1 for a draw, based on 3 head-to-head matchups, 1 each against other teams in the group. See schedules below.

The tie-breaker for group play standings/advancement will be:
  1. Points (W=3, T=1, L=0)
  2. MFLS Point differential (PF-PA), total round
  3. MFLS standing at end of round (YTD pts)
  4. Seeding at beginning of the round
Groupings for round 2 will be predetermined based on round 1 group and finish:
I: A1,B2,C1,D2
J: A2,B1,C2,D1
K: E1,F2,G1,H2
L: E2,F1,G2,H1

Seedings in round 2 will be determined by:
  1. Group points in round 1 (3W/1T/0L)
  2. MFLS point differential (PF-PA), round 1 matches
  3. MFLS points through week 20
Groupings for round 3 will be predetermined based on round 2 group and finish:
M: I1,J2,K1,L2
N: I2,J1,K2,L1

Seedings in round 3 will be determined by:
  1. Group points in round 2 (3W/1T/0L)
  2. MFLS point differential (PF-PA), round 2 matches
  3. MFLS points through week 23

Group Play Schedules

In each round, schedules will be determined by seeding.
Week 1: S1 vs S4, S2 vs S3
Week 2: S1 vs S3, S2 vs S4
Week 3: S1 vs S2, S3 vs S4

Finals

The top team from group M will face the top finisher from group N in a two-leg, aggregate MFLS points final. Ties will be broken by:
  1. Leg 1 (week 27) score
  2. Aggregate Goals (including PK), weeks 27&28
  3. Aggregate Assists, weeks 27&28
  4. Total MFLS points through week 28 (or latest week not tied)
